Wakefield's Market Hall is set to be replaced by a new cinema.

Plans have been agreed to build a new multi-screen cinema in Wakefield but it signals the end of the in-door Market Hall.

Wakefield Council and Sovereign Centros, together with the owners of the Trinity Walk Shopping Centre, have agreed in principle the sale of the site currently occupied by Wakefield’s Market Hall.

Sovereign Centros will now bring forward a planning application for the redevelopment of the site as a new leisure destination to include a nine-screen cinema to be operated by The Light Cinema brand together with restaurant and café units.

Wakefield Council say they are working with the traders who remain in the Market Hall to help them relocate their businesses elsewhere however some traders have told Ridings FM they are shocked and saddened by the news.

You can hear more on this story through out the afternoon in Ridings FM news.
