MPs are suggesting slapping a 25 pence tax on disposable coffee cups.
Research suggests the charge could convince as many as 30 per cent of people to opt for re-usable ones instead.
2-point-5 billion disposable cups are thrown away every year.
Wakefield MP Mary Creagh also heads up the Environmental Committee. She said: "We have seen with the plastic bag charge an 83 percent reduction in plastic bag use. We think the latte levy will be the sort of charge that will make people think [to bring reusable cups]".
