Nearly half of businesses in the Wakefield District say things are on the up.
A survey carried out by the Leeds city region enterprise partnership's found performance has improved over the past year.
Matthew Jennings owns two businesses in Wakefield city centre, he's told Ridings FM he's optimistic about the future:
"I think there's still a place in the world for the high street and the high street's shops. I think people like the personal level of service.
"Although there's online ordering and what-not, we're still going to go in shops and as long as we keep the level or service up and the prices right we're going to see a great uptake for that service."
