Album of the Week

Ren Harvieu: Through The Night (Island)

When you first listen to this album you might think you’ve heard some of the songs before. There’s a certain quality about her voice that convinces you they’re well-known classics and on this evidence there’s every chance that she’ll be the next big British female singer in a similar vein to Adele, Duffy and the late Amy Winehouse. Harvieu was born in Salford and developed her singing through listening to artists like Stevie Wonder, Billie Holliday and Joni Mitchell. After putting her self-written track Through The Night on MySpace, she was approached by several musicians including former Zutons singer Dave McCabe who’s written her current single Open Up Your Arms. Her career stalled for a time following a serious accident last year which left Harvieu unable to walk for a while. During her hospital stay she was visited by one of her musical heroes, Johnny Marr (The Smiths/ Electronic/ The Cribs) who’s given encouragement and inspiration ever since.

Now on release.
