Betfred to sponsor Championship

The Rugby Football League has announced that Betfred will become the title partner of the Championship and League 1 until the end of the 2019 season, meaning that the UK based bookmakers now sponsor all three professional tiers of the sport.

Acting RFL Chief Executive, Ralph Rimmer, said, “We are delighted that Betfred have extended their involvement in the sport to the Championship and League 1. Betfred’s first year involved in the Super League was an unquestionable success and I am certain that they will bring the passion and enthusiasm to their extended sponsorship."

Campbell calls for Hearn Appointment

Featherstone chairman Mark Campbell is calling for the Rugby Football League to appoint sports supremo Barry Hearn as the game’s new chief executive, after it was announced Nigel Wood is to stand down from the position in the coming weeks.

Campbell has paid tribute to the outgoing chief executive of the sport’s governing body, insisting Wood leaves behind an impressive legacy after more than 10 years in post.

And the Featherstone chief is now hoping to see the RFL appoint Hearn in a bid to drive rugby league forward into an exciting new era.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Nigel for all of his efforts over the past decade. We now have to move on and I believe Barry Hearn could achieve great things with our sport. He has done so already in darts, boxing and snooker and we boast - in my view - the best spectator sport on the planet.".

Rovers part company with Griffin

Featherstone Rovers have parted company with prop forward Darrell Griffin.

Griffin has been dismissed with immediate effect due to a serious breach of contract.

The former Super League forward was suspended in December pending an internal investigation on grounds of gross misconduct.

The investigation concluded that Griffin had made three unauthorised appearances for Morley RFC (rugby union) while under contract as a Featherstone Rovers player.

Griffin agreed a new one-year contract with the club in August of last year.

While negotiations progressed, the ex-Leeds, Wakefield, Huddersfield and Salford player was categorically told not to partake in rugby union. These clear terms were also added into his contract.

At a disciplinary hearing on December 11, club officials discussed allegations made against Griffin regarding the contravening of 'Clause 13' of the Rugby Football League (RFL) players’ contract.
